About this deal

Malaysian trumpet snails inhabit the substrate, only rising to the gravel surface when food is introduced. Malaysian trumpet snails are livebearing snails, so no eggs, and instead you’ll just find tiny ones everywhere. Both multiply massively by dining on uneaten fish food, especially when aquariums are overfed, and numbers in the hundreds are not uncommon, even in small tanks. How do I get rid of aquarium snails? It’s difficult to completely eradicate snails from any aquarium once introduced, as the baby snails can penetrate pipework, filters and media, and hide in places where even fish can’t get. Tadpole snail eggs can hatch after all the adults have been removed. Use several of the methods above like physical removal, a snail trap and snail-eating fish to stand the best chance of eradicating them for good. But it may take weeks or months. Why do aquatic snails reach plague proportions? A snail infestation typically happens when you overfeed your fish. The excess food attracts pesky pests and encourages them to reproduce. This might be the best way for getting rid of nocturnal species, such as the Malaysian trumpet snail. 5. Aquarium Salt

Inspect plant leaves (including their undersides) and any other new inhabitants for signs of snails or their eggs before putting them in the aquarium. Vacuum the substrate to clean any leftover fish food. These are later eaten by the snails which in turn helps them reproduce. From my experience, I learned that the best way to deal with a snail infestation in an aquarium is to manually remove them. This can be quite overwhelming for copper-sensitive organisms, and many of them simply won’t survive. What has caused the snail infestation in your fish tank?If you are a longtime aquarist or are planning to be one, chances are you have either experienced or will experience a snail infestation in your aquarium.

Also, they are great cleaners, and some consider them one of the best poop-eating creatures for your aquarium! One standard method is to use a piece of lettuce as bait. Place the lettuce in a jar or container and leave it in the tank overnight. The snails will be attracted to the lettuce and crawl into the pot, where they can then be removed in the morning.

But first things first, it’s important to know that having some snails in your fish tank is not necessarily a bad thing. In small populations, big snails can help regulate algae growth, aerate the substrate and get rid of uneaten fish food. Let’s start with the most straightforward method. You can manually take the pest aquarium snails out of your tank. Most snail species are herbivorous or omnivorous. They’ll eat live aquatic plants, algae, and biofilm. Both fish and snails need a clean environment to stay healthy, and both can be sensitive to changes in water quality. As a result, it is essential to provide regular maintenance and monitoring of fish and snail tanks.

Naturally removing snails with your hands is, perhaps, the easiest and safest method of dealing with an infestation. Soak all new plants in a Hydrogen Peroxide or a bleach solution to kill off snails as well as their eggs and larvae.Add snail-eating fish such as Yoyo loaches or clown loaches,” Yarbrough says. “If you minimize feedings, the loaches will stay hungry and eat snails more effectively.” Loaches make a meal of eggs as well as adult snails. 4. Introduce snail traps The first step is to find a container that will fit snugly against the side of your aquarium. A cup or jar works well for this purpose. Once you have your container, drill or poke a small hole in the bottom. The next step is to bait your trap. Snails are attracted to both fresh and saltwater, so you can use either to bait your trap. You probably can’t evict all slimy tenants this way, but it can reduce the population to a more manageable level. 2. Reduce fish feeding

Take a piece of fruit or vegetables snails love ( but make sure it isn’t toxic to your fish!) and drop it in the tank. This might include: Aquarium snails can be cute in small numbers but a pest if they reach plague proportions. Here's how to get rid of them. Where do aquarium snails come from?

Wondering where all those unwanted snails in your aquarium came from? Learn how they probably got there, and how to send them packing.

I, for one, have found that scooping snails from the tank and using traps are two of the easiest and most humane methods of dealing with these pesky pests. Some species like Malaysian trumpet snails are nocturnal and like to burrow in the substrate, so it can be harder to collect them from the tank. In those cases, attract the snails by using some delicious vegetables as bait. Drop a piece of cucumber, zucchini, carrot, or lettuce into the aquarium overnight, and by the next morning, the vegetable should be covered in snails for you to remove. Some hobbyists like to put the food in a DIY snail trap (e.g., a container with holes in the lid that are big enough for the snails to enter but too small for fish to pass) so that the snails cannot easily leave even after they get full.
