About this deal

The idea of this book is to take tiny experiments in your life revolving around doing less. Sounds like a great concept! The author spends a lot of time sharing experiences from her own life, marriage, and kids. Personal experience can be a profound place to begin a story. I just couldn't connect to the author in any meaningful way. I found the focus on "femininity" to be over the top. Prioritize: Identify your top 3 priorities for the week and devote yourself to them. Remember to focus on the vital few 20% of things that give you 80% results.

So now it is, and if you’re ready to have time on your side, you can give yourself that gift right now .

Because I was so steeped in over-achieving I couldn’t take the time to really heal not only from a devastating birth, grief of leaving a profession I was in for 17 years and losing both parents within a year of one another. Kate: Yeah. Early in the book promotion process I was on a podcast and she started off the podcast saying, well, I was very surprised to say that I really loved your book and I was like, okay. And she said, because I assumed, by the title, I was very triggered by the title, and I assumed that what you were going to be talking about was exactly that, hiring a nanny, getting a house cleaner, dah, dah, dah. And she said, I was raised by a single mom who worked three jobs and I was pleasantly surprised and thrilled to see that there’s nothing you wrote about in this book that my mother could not have done. And I wrote it with that in mind because I want people to actually be able to do this and get really good results, not to diminish their results. Did this book not have an editor who could have done a search and delete for words like very, really, super, etc? Data shows that we do the best work when we take frequent breaks. Optimal productivity is 50 minutes on (as in working) and 17 minutes off.

We have been raised to believe that the more we can do by ourselves, the more valuable we are as human beings— this is false! Recognizing that your worthiness as a human being is not based on your ability to get more done by yourself makes it much easier to ask for help. Asking for help or needing help is not a sign of weakness, it's a sign of being human. None of us were meant to do all the things by ourselves.

Kate: I literally… I’m quite simple when it comes to the woo. I literally will sit in my car and imagine myself protected in an energetic bubble before I go into that interaction. It takes five seconds. Create a weekly to-do list instead of a daily list: This allows you to see the big picture, be realistic about what is possible in the time you have, and leaves space for the unexpected. Kate is an entrepreneur. After becoming a mom for the second time and managing a series of health issues, she was forced to do less. In fact, her life required her to cut her workload in half. That’s when something surprising happened. She was able to achieve the same results while working half the time. How exactly did she do it? Learn How to Do Less with Kate Northrup
