About this deal

Despite his heroic efforts he was slain by an arrow in the second game, giving his enemy some useful victory points. And while this is fine when the units are both made up of human miniatures, it tends to dispel the suspension of disbelief when your Bellicose Foot unit made up of three Trolls has the same game impact as the Bellicose Foot unit made up of six troops in light armour.

The emphasis is on a playable fantasy-themed game rather than an over-detailed simulation of battle. Dragon Rampant is published by Osprey Publishing as part of their Blue Book series of wargame rules. The difference between beginning Lion Rampant and beginning Dragon Rampant is that my armies for the Hundred Years War were already painted–enough so that I could field seven retinues of English and French. I’ve got a fair few types to pick from in 15mm, including just spicing up some historicals with a giant or wizard, etc. Not having played the Dragon Rampant for quite a while, we decided to play the basic kill scenario “Gory Bloodbath on the Plains of Doom” and give it a short review.

I also selected Quests for both forces, going with the ones that seemed most plausible for each side. Of course, where there are points people will quibble about the costing and what is and isn’t a good deal.

This was an encounter I was unfamiliar with, with newly crowned King Edward sending an embassy to the Scots only to be ambushed by the Lancastrians. I did well on my pledge to play more sci fi, but not so well when it came to playing other’s games (though I did do that more than usual – so not too bad). She has also worked with Osprey Games on a range of titles, including the Dracula's America and Frostgrave series. The range of possible unit stats in a game of medieval combat is significantly more narrow than you’d find in a fantasy game.Ops, like all best plans the hobbits defeat the chieftain who breaks and takes the goblins with him. The scenario itself was to get to the Human village in the middle of the table and capture the civilians. That might seem an essential part of fantasy gaming, but sadly, many games in recent decades have been highly prescriptive, requiring specific miniatures and involving stifling background "fluff".

Only having reasonably comparable human military forces in my collection, this is probably not too big a deal as any effects will even themselves out. Even the spells available to Spellcasters – I reckon every one can be used as a command and control-type ability by a force commander.Plain pewter badges take a couple of days to make, while the plated silver options can take about three weeks. Sci-Fi Rampant (which is Dragon Rampant played straight from the book, but with a lot of thought going into the representation of the troop types we want to use) was great fun as always. I have plastic cavalry and infantry and some metal leaders–a Theoden, Eomer, Eowyn and standard bearer who can form a unit of heroes.
