Cycle City Active City 2022 is supported by the Department for Transport as its annual active travel summit, and the conference plenaries, breakout and workshop sessions will run alongside Department for Transport-led sessions on delivering LCWIPs, CWIS2 and the role of Active Travel England.The groundwork is in place: 2022 will establish Active Travel England to take forward the commitments laid out in Gear Change andthe Transport Decarbonisation Plan, as well as the forthcomingCycling & Walking Investment Strategy 2. This interim report describes the effect of investment in cycle infrastructure in the eight Cycle City Ambition cities up to the end of 2017. It reports the increase in cycling along routes that received capital investment; city-wide cycling trends; propensity to cycle by gender, age and ethnicity; and differences in the demographic profile of new and existing cyclists. A final report will be published in 2021.

First, sit down and plan out a route. But don’t reach straight for Google Maps – their cycling directions aren’t great for avoiding busy roads. CycleStreets and Citymapper will calculate a quiet route for you, but take their directions with a pinch of salt. Citymapper only works in London, Manchester and Birmingham, and CycleStreets is slightly out of date in places. Like anything new, it’ll take a while to get used to it and fine-tune your routine. But you can do this. Just take it at your own pace, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. You might be feeling nervous, or daunted by all the new things to learn. But hopefully you’re feeling excited too – you should be! You’re about to open up a whole new side to your city.
